All hail the fail

Napowrimo April 22nd, 2022

In honour of today’s being the 22nd day of Na/GloPoWriMo 2022, we were challenged to write a poem that uses repetition. We can repeat a sound, a word, a phrase, or an image, or any combination of things.

I chose something that’s been on my mind for the last 20 days.

Over poets’ castles morning breaks,
From slumber does the poet wake,
To find the grade, he did not make.

All hail the fail, all hail the fail!

No Princes’ crown, head unadorned,
His dapper words are once more scorned,
Feels April passing; success is mourned.

All hail the fail, all hail the fail!

Damn “If at first you don’t succeed”!
If you prick me, does my ink not bleed?
This writing is a thankless deed.

All hail the fail, all hail the fail!

Prompt Herald arrives with word from high,
“Good try, good try, good try, good try”
Time for one more coffee and another sigh.

All hail the fail, all hail the fail!

But sanguine beats his scarlet heart,
Drums praise on those who played their part,
Returns to the page and once more starts.

To write and read, to write and read,
To learn and heed, to learn and heed.
All hail the fail, take note I plead,
This writing is a learned deed.

  1. Great rhythm and repetition, Graham! Also, a timely reminder that exam season is here. The lines that resonate with me are:
‘If you prick me, does my ink not bleed?
This writing is a thankless deed.’
