April 11. Eleven days in and we are asked to work up a Villanelle using lines from songs. I took my inspiration from Dylan Thomas, Simon and Garfunkel and Pink Floyd. Sometimes, you just need to hear your own voice say, it’s going to be OK.
I am a rock; I am an island.
When wild waters try to wash away my shores, I say,
Shine on you crazy diamond.
I won’t fritter the ticking grains of my hourglass sand,
Or fly-tip my life like discarded litter, for
I am a rock; I am an island.
If solar drought tries to dry out my limited land,
I’ll burn that doubt and soundly shout,
Shine on you crazy diamond!
When no one’s left to by me stand,
I’ll hear the words that bear me far from fear;
I am a rock; I am an island.
Should life cast cruel cards to my hand,
Then damn those clubs and hearts and spades, and
Shine on you crazy diamond.
When fierce foes my faith do falsely brand and reprimand,
Tie me to my mast with tight rope strands; Yes!
I AM a rock; I AM an island.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
