Homies

NAPOWRIMO 2024, Day 8

Our (optional) prompt for today takes its inspiration from Laura Foley’s poem “Year End” and which asks us to write a poem that centres around an encounter or relationship between two people (or things) that shouldn’t really have ever met – whether due to time, space, age, the differences in their nature, or for any other reason.

My mind shot to thinking about all the implausible meetings of renowned people throughout history; Jesus and Hitter, Florence Nightingale and Margaret Thatcher, a cave man and the Pope.

I decided to choose two people with the same name and as it has ancient connections with Bacchanalian overtones, I tried my hand at a Dithyramb, which is a poetic form named after the god of revelry Dionysus. The dithyramb was originally composed to be sung by a chorus. The frame is at the discretion of the poet although the theme should be fitting with the history of the genre.

Stately Homer he decreed,
That all at the bar should drink up mead.
“It’s the finest drink you’ll ever need,
So, here’s to Zeus, and damn Hades.”

Says the yellow man, he’s had enough,
Of all this ancient waffle guff.
“Why would a real man drink that stuff,
When from Aphrodite’s breast flows Duff?”

And…..

“All the Homies at Mo’s know,
When Mo calls time, it’s time to go,
And we’ll sing the chorus, fast not slow,
Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh!”
