This year’s preparatory call for NAPOWRIMO is to start by reading Katie Naughton’s poem, “Debt Ritual: Oysters.” Now, we should write our own poem in which we refer to a specific writer or artist (or work of literature/art) and make a declarative statement about want or desire. The poem should be set in a particular, people-filled place, like a restaurant, bus station, museum, school, etc.

There I was, leaning on the bar,
Sticky carpet beneath my feet,
Pint of bitter in a classic jar,
When I heard the bell start to ring
Ding, a ling, a ling!
It wasn’t the landlord’s last orders peel,
It was much closer to home.
Three pints inside me I could feel,
Now my cork was a popping.
Ding, a ling, a ling!
I turned to head for the door,
And then I saw the queue.
My eyes went pop, my jaw hit the floor
My Muncheon bladder started screaming.
Ding, a ling, a ling!
It wasn’t too much to ask
I only wanted a pee,
But fate had crippled my task,
And now my legs they were platting.
Ding, a ling, a ling!
There was no way out
Because there was no way in,
It was time to sup up
And head for the back-alley bins!
DING, A LING, A LING!!
That was fun to read, Graham! I can imagine Munch leaning on a bar. Not sure about imagining him have a pee!

That explains the face. Good to see your poetry on NaPoWriMo again. I opted for bins and alcohol for my first poem, too.
