Water Babies

For Andrew, who likes a political allegory

May 26th

Opaque tears run races down green lanes on freshly waxed leaves,

Each translucent drop fashioned and tempered aloft.

Water babies sired by the sun,

Birthed from the oceans’ wombs,

Still born givers of life.

Thirsty earth quenchers they slake the clay and loam,

Feeding tubers, roots, and seeds.

In legions they reign, caring nothing for the plans of man,

Their combined power is immense,

And not to be reckoned with.

Malleable by nature, transformative in manner,

Size, mass, and power all tools at their disposal.

As tiny offspring they appear then evolve,

Into roaring teenage rivers that run and run and turn,

Into calmer adults, rolling back into their mother’s arms.
