Challenge accepted; write a poem that anthropomorphizes a kind of food. It could be a favourite food of yours, or maybe one you feel conflicted about.
I chose one I fell in love with when in France and embodied it in someone I have admired since childhood. It could be the perfect romantic dinner date.
I was hooked by that look across the table that night in La Rochelle.
The golden glaze of your honey-coloured gaze,
The glint in your eye – dazed and amazed.
There sat my Audrey,
Dining with me at Tiffany’s,
A divine, delicious epiphany.
Exquisitely dressed in pale saffron silk,
A starlit goddess born of milk,
Of our star-crossed love there could be no ilk.
Parting golden hair, stroking lemon skin,
Silver my stiletto plunging within;
My sweet paramour, please forgive my sins.
Then, your absolving kiss,
O, Miss Hepburn, this is bliss,
An angel’s nipple on my lips.
From that night till my dying day,
I’ll dessert you not, for here I’ll stay,
In France, in love, with Madame Brulé.
Truly delectable! I especially love the internal rhyme in ‘The golden glaze of your honey-coloured gaze’, the cheeky pun ‘I’ll dessert you not’ and the lines:
‘Parting golden hair, stroking lemon skin,
Silver my stiletto plunging within’.

How beautifully you’ve expressed your love for dessert, Graham 🙂
‘Exquisitely dressed in pale saffron silk,
A starlit goddess born of milk,
Of our star-crossed love, there could be no ilk.’
This is so different from the kind of poetry you write. Very well done. I liked the last time too!

Hi Smitha,
Thanks for your time. I think I’m still very much experimenting with style and format to be honest. I like to try to fit both to suit the subject, and such love deserves a tender approach to the writing.
