Passing

NAPOWRIMO 2024, Day 2

Today we were asked to write a platonic love poem. In other words, a poem not about a romantic partner, but some other kind of love like that of for a sister, a friend, or even a really good Chicago deep dish pizza! The poem should be written directly to the object of our affections (like a letter is written to “you”) and should describe at least three memories of engaging with that person/thing.

I’d waited all my earthbound life to see you,
Not that you knew.
I’d dreamed, I’d climbed, I’d schemed, but you,
You just flew,

O so high.

My fingers clawed Skye’s earth at your sight,
And silent flight.
Against a backdrop of black rock like night,
Your winged might,

Passing by.

At eye-to-eye-level, I saw you see me,
Insignificant me.
Distant mainland mountains o’er the sea,
Sang Gaelic,

Just for me.

Is it so wrong to want to never see you again?
So, to keep pristine and untainted my love for your life.
