NaPoWriMo 2023, Day 10
Today’s prompt was to write a sea shanty inspired poem. Get your hankies ready!
……………………………………………………………….
(Solo)
Come the cold winter, we followed the rule,
No matter how poorly, we still went to school.
And in that cold winter you’d oft hear the sound
Of kids in the playground blowing snot on the ground,
(2nd solo voice)
And all the teachers would cry?
(Baritones)
Blow ya blow nose snotty, blow ya nose please,
If you’ve no hankie then silver ya sleeve
Blow ya nose snotty, blow ya nose quick,
By spreading ya germs, you’ll make the school sick.
(2nd solo voice)
And all the kids would sing….
(Altos)
Cough, splutter, splutter and cough,
There’s a tap in me nose I cannot turn off.
Cough, splutter, splutter and cough,
Please sweet teacher, make it bugger off!
(Solo voice 1)
Now, our warm winters are sickly horrid,
We’re bereft of snow, but full of Covid.
Now our immune systems are all kaput,
All it takes is one snowflake, to make the schools shut.
(Altos)
Cough, splutter, splutter and cough,
There’s a tap in me nose I cannot turn off.
Cough, splutter, splutter and cough,
Please sweet teacher, make it bugger off!
(Baritones)
Blow ya blow nose snotty, blow ya nose please,
If you’ve no hankie then silver ya sleeve
Blow ya nose snotty, blow ya nose quick,
By spreading ya germs, you’ll make the school sick.
“Blow ya blow nose snotty, blow ya nose please,
If you’ve no hankie then silver ya sleeve” — There are sooooo many times I’ve sung versions of this in my head, as a teacher. Happy to have this in my pocket …along with extra tissues.

Inspired by my own allergy responding sinus and a few contemporary social comments. Get the class to sing along next time

“All it takes is one snowflake, to make the schools shut.” cracked me up. The despair of working parents!
